How to Deal: Finding Your First Apartment

Moving out on your own can be scary and completely overwhelming. My house-hunting experience was kind of a nightmare and I wish I had more guidance beforehand. These tips can help to make your moving experience a little easier:

1. Do Your Research

Weather you're moving to a completely new city like I did, or looking to move out of mom and dads this step is important. Research what areas you'll likely be hanging out (bars, restaurants, parks etc). Whatever you like to do for fun it's important you're not too far away. You'll also want to get a feel for the areas you're looking in. I found a beautiful (and affordable) apartment complex whose website looked incredible, but once I dove deeper into the area I realized its an "up and coming neighborhood" which is really just a nice way of saying "come here in the daylight". If I wouldn't have found that out I would be sleeping with mace under my pillow. Another important step in the researching process is to call ahead and see what each apartments availability is. Learn from my mistakes! You don't want to tour an apartment, fall in love with it and realize the availability doesn't line up with your timeline.

2. Make a Budget & Be Open Minded

Before you tour any apartment make a budget. Figure out how much you're paychecks will be after taxes and estimate living expenses like food, cable, internet etc. You will want to have plenty of money left over each month for savings and for fun. Do not make yourself rent poor! Remember this is your first apartment, it doesn't need to look like Pinterest threw up. Especially when you move to a new place, you will want to go out, make friends and experience the city you live in. It's really hard to do this when you have to put every penny into your rent. Every apartment is a blank canvas, a little decorating, repainting and your furniture can really transform your space.

3. Be Organized & Have a Plan

When apartment hunting for the first time it is crucial to have a plan of action. I did my initial research, and found a list of apartments, called ahead and made appointments for when I'd be in town. Once I had it all set I made a binder. I highly recommend doing this! I printed out the information (address, phone number, etc) for each apartment complex as well as the amenities and rent on a sheet of paper. I then printed out each layout, added a folder (for the paperwork/flyers they hand you) and some lined paper so I could take notes. I did this for each place I was touring and put them in order by appointment. Doing so, made it easy to look back at each place at the end of the day and compare them to one another.

4. Be Perceptive & Go With Your Gut
While looking through apartments be very perceptive to your surroundings. If anything about the place your considering makes you feel uncomfortable,(the landlord, the people walking around, the state of the building, etc) don't take it. That feeling will only get worse once you live there and once you're in a contract it can be difficult (and expensive) to break.

Most importantly have fun and be proud of yourself! This is a huge step in your life, make the most of it and don't let the stress ruin your experience.

Style Sunday: Nautical

So this week I've been really slacking on the blog posts. I feel like I've started about five new ones and have been too ADD to finish any of them. Overall this week was crazy busy. I've been trying to soak up as much family and lake time as possible before I move to Kentucky in just a few short weeks, go to my little cousin's recital and help out with my sisters graduation party.

This weeks Style Sunday is an outfit that I wore to my cousin's dance recital. My all time favorite look is literally anything nautical. If its red, white and blue, has an anchor or sailboat on it chances are I'm obsessed. So this weeks style Sunday encompasses the nautical look as well as mixing patterns.

Tee- JCrew Factory
Cardigan- Tommy Hilfiger
Skirt- Express
Belt- The Limited
Necklace- The Limited
Shoes- Nickles

I combined my recently purchased J Crew anchor T Shirt with a red skirt and striped cardigan accessorized with gold accents. This look could be worn with or without the cardigan. Which was perfect for the recital when it was freezing inside and blazing hot outside. Another part of this outfit that I love is the mixing of patterns. This can be a tricky thing to execute. I feel that it worked in this outfit because the patters were from the same color scheme and the T Shirt was such a small pattern versus the bold stripes of the cardigan.

What is your favorite nautical look?

Style Sunday: White Jeans

White jeans, every girl has them, they are a classic summer wardrobe staple. Many struggle with finding the perfect pair that you can't see literally everything underneath. I personally always buy my white jeans from The Limited (order here). They are the perfect thickness without being bulky.  But because of their thickness I always go up a size in them. I recommend to go up a size in all white jeans, no mater the brand. This helps with the see through aspect and overall makes the jeans lay flatter. For this outfit I paired my white jeans with a green and white sleeveless top, a pink blazer, wedges and some of my favorite bangles. This look completely screams summer!

Blazer: The Limited
Top: Banana Republic
Jeans: The Limited
Wedges: Guess
Bangle: Lilly Pulitzer
Bangle: The Limited (x2)

How do you wear your white jeans?

Lilly Pulitzer Agendas Available for Pre Order

Yes you read that right, the Lilly Pulitzer 2014-2015 agendas are now available for pre order! If you currently do not use an agenda go and pre order one now! It will literally change your life. I absolutely could not live without my Lilly agenda. It is my life line. I am so crazy busy that my agenda keeps me sane and organized. My current agenda is the Jumbo size and I can never go back to any of the smaller sizes. If you are as crazy busy as I am I highly recommend the Jumbo. You can write so much more in both the monthly and weekly calendars. It is defiantly worth the extra money.

The new agendas come in more sizes than ever before; small, medium, large and jumbo. Ranging in price from $17-$34. They come in several adorable prints including "Jellies be Jammin'", "Peelin' Out", "Lilly Lovers", "Trippin and Sippin", "Let's Cha Cha" and "Tusk in Sun".

I pre ordered the Jumbo Agenda (of course) in "Biggest Fan".

Order yours here

Did you pre order an agenda? If so what size/print do you prefer?

Style Sundays: Get Nauti Shorts

Happy Memorial weekend everyone! I apologize, I've really been slacking in the blog posts lately. Between preparing for my big move, keeping up with my last class, and my sisters graduation, its been a whirlwind.

This week's Style Sunday is styling the Lilly Pulitzer Get Nauti Liza shorts. I love everything and anything nautical and these shorts are no exception. Of all the Lilly shorts I own these are hands down my favorite. I paired the shorts with an orange cotton tee, which really brought out the orange accents in the shorts. I then added the white blazer in order to dress up the look just a little bit more.

Blazer: The Limited
Tee: The Limited
Shorts: Lilly Pulitzer
Jewelry: Kate Spade
Shoes: Nickles

What are your all time favorite Lilly shorts?

Best Life Lessons Sex & The City Taught Us

This summer is surly a life changing summer for me. I am the only one of my best friends graduating in June and moving away in July. All of my friends are living in our college town this summer all together and are continuing to live together in the fall. It has been really difficult for me to wrap my mind around the fact that I'm soon leaving all my friends and they will be continuing on all together. Leaving them is going to be extremely tough.

Currently I am taking my final class of my undergrad career and visiting my best friends a few days a week in the meantime. So this week when I visited, in typical fashion, we all sat around and watched sex and the city for hours and hours on end. Drinking wine and catching up all the while. Our conversation turned to our lives and our friendship and how it connects to the episode we were watching. I then realized how many life lessons I really have taken away from this monumental show.

1. Love yourself.

2. Your friends really are your soul mates.

3. Not to settle.

4. Everything happens for a reason.

And most importantly ....

5. How to be a great friend.

Kristin
